Bangkok vegan restaurant ditches plastic straws for morning glory stems

7-Eleven take note.

Bangkok vegan restaurant ditches plastic straws for morning glory stems
28 September, 2017 Bangkok time
For over two years Broccoli Revolution has been one of Bangkok's most reliable vegan restaurants thanks to a menu of meat-free Mediterranean, Western and Southeast Asian dishes.

Now, owner Naya Ehrlich-Adam is turning her back on wasteful plastic by adopting morning glory stems as the default straw served with every drink in the restaurant.

The rigid, hollow, waterproof stems (which her team buys from Villa Market) spend 15 minutes soaking in a solution of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) before being rinsed three times and cleaned inside thoroughly with a chopstick. Any stems that aren't suitable for this straw conversion therapy get given to in-house staff to consume.

Don't freak out if you aren't willing to suck your acai berry smoothie through a vegetable. They will still keep the option of plastic straws.

Aside from the new veggie straws, the restaurant has also introduced plant-based food containers and bioplastic cutlery for take-away packages.
