Y50 Music & Gallery
10 December, 2009 Bangkok time

Opened: September, 2009.

The buzz: After a temporary closure, one of Ekamai’s beloved staples, Y50, has re-emerged with an additional space for an art gallery. And, yes, it still doubles as a retro furniture shop as every item you see or sit on comes with a price tag.

The décor: Retro chic is still the name of the game. The large, high-ceilinged space, sectioned off into many smaller rooms, houses a mishmash of furniture from avant-garde pod seating to your grandpa’s chaise longue. Look up and you’ll be dazzled by the wide variety of hanging lamps and chandeliers. There’s also a small stage and a pool table for added entertainment. As for the new gallery, it’s actually just a small corner reserved for paintings.

The music: The playlist features the usual array of Thai and international easy listening early on, before the nightly house band crank out jazzy tunes. Head there on a Wednesday night to see the DJ spin some glorious disco.

The price: Cocktails B150, beer B100, whisky B850 and mixers B40.
The crowd: Ekamai’s after-work crowd, art and (vintage) furniture lovers and Y50’s die-hard regulars including plenty of celebs and film makers.
Why you’ll come back: You’re looking to spruce up your pad and rub shoulders with some of the city’s A-list. Also because it’s rare to find a spot in Ekamai where you can turn up dressed down.
