The place: If you don’t mind balmy weather, opt for the original street stall in the front of Phraeng Phutorn Rd., where owner Wuttikul Thongampha (Joe) is usually seen roasting the bread and whipping up the drinks himself. However, if you prefer the comfort of AC, head to the homey shophouse across the street.... Nom Joe comes alive in the evening when high school students and residential regulars pack the place. At night it is even more bustling, with groups of night bikers and others dropping by to refuel.... The service can be a bit sluggish during peak hours, but friendly staff and boisterous crowds will keep your spirits high.

Selection and price: As you would expect from the name, Nom Joe deals in dairy. Enjoy a comforting cup of nom rawn (hot milk) along with thick toast smeared with your choice of toppings (butter and sugar or banana and chocolate). If you crave heartier fare, Nom Joe’s menu includes a small-yet-satisfying selection of noodles, rice dishes and salads. Prices are wallet-friendly—and portions are generous.

Must-haves: The rich, velvety sangkhaya here is yummy, so don’t miss the khanom pang sangkhaya (steamed bread with Thai-style custard). The staff tends to be a tad too generous with the sugar, so either bring an insulin shot or let them know in advance if you would like them to hold back a on few heaping teaspoons full.... Health-conscious diners will enjoy kuay tiaw lui suan (fresh spring rolls with shrimp or pork fillings). We also love Joe’s tom yam noodles served in a mildly spicy broth and topped with a generous amount of red BBQ pork. Tell the staff if you don’t want entrails.
