Animated films have a way of telling stories that normal, human-starred films can't. The fantastical, whimsical manner of which an animated film is made, usually adds character and depth to the overall story-telling, which is why we're looking forward to this year's edition of Cartoons Underground, which takes place at Kult Kafe on Oct 22. To celebrate its fifth year, they've introduced a second program of short films.

There were a total of 487 applications from all over the world this year, as compared to 150 in 2015. However, the festival's Program Director, award-winning filmmaer Tan Wei Keong picked a total of 20 shorts, and divided them into two programs called "Time Loop" and "Life Warp". The former will open with Davier Woon's and Joshua Tan’s film about a vibrant bunch of characters who are stuck in the past, present and future realities, aptly titled A Brief History of Time, while the latter will kick off with The Little Pastry Chef by Soh Fia, Mirza Ja'afar and Grace Ong, which tells the story of a perfectionist who's having troubles in baking the perfect cake.

The films will be screened at 6:30pm and 8:30pm, and you can pay as you wish for admission. The artists and animators will also be on site if you're interested in having a chat with them. Here's what you can expect:
