The buzz: The son of River City Shopping Complex’s owner has transformed the unused half of the rooftop at Bar-B-Q Corner, the city’s allegedly first moo kata joint, into a drinking venue. But don’t let the notion of a smoke-filled bar put you off, because Balco somehow manages to impress us with its nondescript decor and, of course, the riverside views.
The décor: We can’t really put our finger on it, but we heart the overall effect. It’s this airy space, sheltered by a white arched roof and partitioned by a U-shaped bar. The bar’s lower level is where you get to gaze at the views, sitting on the cozy seats and sofas. There’s also a separate pool room if the romantic skyline don’t do it for you.
The music: Bossa nova beats start the evening before house tunes carry things over into the wee hours.
The price: Cocktails B180, beer B80, whisky B1,200. Light snacks start from B100.
The crowd: Couples, walk-in locals and tourists.
Why you’ll come back: Because you’re paying a lot less for the same views as the neighboring five-star hotels (and it’s on a rooftop) and you don’t have to worry about a dress code either.
