There’s more bluegrass in Bangkok than you’d expect. This is a city that loves to banjo. The Southeastern Gathering, a music event bringing together folk tunes from around the world, returns to Bangkok this October for six days of tunes.
With bluegrass, Irish traditional, and old-time music at Public House Bangkok Oct 20-25. This will be the third edition of Southeastern Gathering.
The event begins with three instrument specific parties. The first “Pickin’ Parlour” features the dobro with private Penthouse house-party concerts limited to 20 guests each. This will be followed by events focused on the mandolin and dobro on October 21 and 22 respectively.
And while those events might be for the connoisseurs, the real party starts on Friday with The Welcome Jam from 7-10pm, featuring visiting artists and local musicians alike for jams and. The tunes are free-flow, and so is the beer, along with canapes.
The Main Gathering is on Saturday, Oct 24, with a 3-9pm all-day session, featuring more than 10 bands and performances from around the world. Finally, the party comes to an end on Sunday with the Songs & Stories Brunch, a mid-day brunch experience to round out the week of folk.
The events, organized by the Bluegrass Underground Bangkok and Irish Session Bangkok (together forming Trad Bangkok), will be one of the biggest gatherings of Irish, bluegrass, Appalachian, and folk music of the year. Visiting musicians this year include Tokyo’s Bluegrass Police, North Carolina banjo player Tray Wellington, County Roscommon musician Luke Coffey, and more.
