Thailand’s Culture Ministry and the Thai Film Archive recently compiled a list of 25 films to be declared part of our national heritage. Despite being a victim of censorship on multiple occasions, Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Palme d’Or winner, Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives, made the cut, so to speak. The rest of the list is mostly pre-1980s, with the oldest film portraying King Chulalongkorn’s visit to Switzerland in 1897. How this matters to you Bangkokians is that growing awareness about these movies means more funds for the Thai Film Archive (to preserve, restore and project these films).
