Thailand is still on Washington’s priority watch list for intellectual property violations. On the day this was announced, cops performed raids on 13 shops and arrested 11 people in Patong (Phuket). Does this spell the end of bootleg DVDs on the sidewalks? Will we, one day, actually have to pay B60,000 for Adobe Creative Suite? Last time we checked, our friends at Pantip were still paying B20,000 a month for unspecified protection—per shop! So that while the dek waen touting the DVDs sometimes get busted, we’re betting the guys behind them aren’t going to be out of a job any time soon. Last year, Thai authorities claim they investigated 4,851 piracy cases and seized a total of 4.25 million items. Then why is it we’ve never had trouble finding a pirate DVD in town? Do the police only seize really bad movies?
