26 Sukhumvit Soi 1. 02-655-2471/2. Open daily 7pm-late. BTS Ploenchit.
The buzz: This sister of the Gazebo in Khaosan offers an improved décor, a great view and better service to a new Sukhumvit crowd.
The décor: One of the owners collected crateloads of fixtures during a marathon race through the souk of Cairo. Technically, the décor is Egyptian even though everyone refers to this kind of place as a Moroccan bar. You’ll be overlooking the area surrounding the corner of Soi 1 and Sukhumvit from a breezy penthouse that has a roof, but no windows, and hence no air-con. Across from the bar and live music area is a room dubbed The Harem, where a DJ will mix nightly, blasting through a state-of-the-art sound system. There, you can sit back on daybeds with oversized pillows as you overlook the dance floor. “I am a sultan” sensations guaranteed.
The music: Live music in the open-air area (Gazebo) and house DJs in The Harem club.
The crowd: Considering the neighborhood, it’s important to note that the target is young BTS-commuting professionals—the right kind of professionals, not the ones down in Nana Plaza.
The price: Food B80-400, whiskey B1,500-2,600, cocktails B180-220, beer B150-220, mixers B90 and Shisha B350.
Why you’ll come back: Probably because of the view and the décor, but the owners have so many ambitions for the bands, The Harem, and the rest of the building, that the list of reasons for being a regular here might just keep on getting longer and longer.
