We put the city's top itim kati names to a blind taste test.

Taste Test: Who does Bangkok’s best coconut ice cream?
14 January, 2018 Bangkok time

Nuttaporn Ice Cream RUNNER UP

The refreshing, clear flavor and tart finish evoke sorbet or granita, but come at the expense of a creamy texture.
Verdict: Coconut ice cream for the guilt-ridden.
Price: B220/eight scoops
94 Phraeng Phuthon Rd., Phra Nakorn, 089-826-5752. Open Mon-Sat 9am-4pm

 Phai Tong

The favorite ice cream of Bangkok’s street corners tastes like milk powder riddled with condensed milk.
Verdict: Not worth chasing down the cart.
Price: B240/2.2 kg
Charoen Nakorn Soi 56, 086-789-1817. Open daily 6am-7pm

 The Local Canteen YUCK!

Candy-sweet and artificial, like sipping from a can of Carnation.
Verdict: This is not coconut ice cream.
Price: B45/cup
Narathiwas Soi 3. Open Mon-Sat 11:30am-3pm, 5:30-9pm. BTS Chong Nonsi

 Mahachai

Smooth and creamy, but without character and closer to vanilla than coconut.
Verdict: Its rightful place is a Bangkok food court.
Price: B25/cup
Lotus Supermarket, Rama 4 Rd., 087-072-0073

 Jing Jing BK PICK!

The silky texture goes well with a smoky, roasted-coconut fragrance and the full flavor of a ripe coconut.
Verdict: We can eat this every day.
Price: B50/scoop
154 Charoenkrung Soi 14, 081-974-1929

 Ete

The starkly white color conjures up toothpaste, while the fake sweetness does little to spruce up the hard chunks of coconut. Melts rapidly.
Verdict: Its chemical color says stay away.
Price: B55/scoop
7-Eleven citywide

 Thiparot

A little too rich on the tongue and the orange tinge is off-putting, but the bits of jackfruit and lod chong add good variety.
Verdict: Almost there.
Price: B80/box
Krungthep-Nonthaburi Soi 2, 02-585-0415
