Roof by Muse Thonglor

Thonglor Soi 10, 087-888-5599
This lovely rooftop bar, located in the middle of Thonglor Soi 10, always likes to keep things fresh and interesting, especially on the food front. Following the oyster promotion last month, the bar embraces Euro 2012 with its daily specials menu, featuring dishes related to the countries playing that day. So if you come to cheer on England on one of the two big screens, then you can also enjoy a plate of fish n’ chips at the same time, as well as the usual chill alfresco vibe.

Sambal Bar & Grill

The Royal Orchid Sheraton, Charoen Krung Soi 30, 02-266-9214
This riverside bar and restaurant in a hotel might not be an obvious spot to catch the big match but it’s got a few tricks up its sleeve along with its impressive setting. The food is an interesting mix of spicy Malaysian and Indonesian dishes that go well with their signature cocktails and wide range of imported beers, both on tap and by the bottle. Even better, the bar will be extending its opening hours to make sure you can catch all of the later games, which is good to know seeing as these matches won’t be kicking off until at least 1:45am.

Hippie De Bar

46 Khaosan Rd., 02-629-3508
If you want to soak up a more European vibe then you can always head along to the cosmopolitan backpacker hub of Khao San. It’s also home to one of our favorite watering holes, Hippie De Bar, with its old-house charm, good selection of alternative music and the huge screen showing the games out on the terrace. Reservations are definitely recommended, though, as the place always gets packed. Still you’re in the right neighborhood if you can’t get a seat, as the many bars in the area will be showing the matches on big screens.

Brew Beer n’ Cider

SeenSpace, Thonglor Soi 13. 02-185-2366
This tiny bar in Seenspace just keeps on expanding out across the central outdoor courtyard of this community mall. The popularity is clearly down to the impressive (and regularly changing) range of imported beers, which makes it the perfect spot to drink along with the individual matches. Why not try out the new arrivals Köstritzer and Bitburger while cheering Germany on in their opening match this Sat (Jun 9) or choose between France’s Kronenburg and Britain’s London Pride during their clash on Monday (Jun 11).

Asiatique

Asiatique The Riverfront, 2194 Charoenkrung 72-74 Rd., 02-108-4005
It’s new and it’s hot, and if you live in the neighboring area, then you might not want to head too far from home because of the late kick off times. Why not just stroll along to Checkmate Bar & Bistro (Room E01) for some Thai-international fusion, a live band and draught beer; or head to the second branch of the Flann O’Brien’s Irish Pub (Warehouse no. 10) for a more international touch.

Beer Vault

G/F, Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Sukhumvit Soi 15, 02-309-3113.
This tiny hotel bar is famed for its daily beer o’ clock (5:30-7:30pm) offering buy-one-get-one-free on local beers, and the special deal on their “beer lovers’ list” (daily through 9:30pm) which changes each month. During this soccer season, Guinness, Hoegaarden, Boddingtons, Leffe Brune, Stella and Singha are all B165 per pint (B120 for a half-pint). Plus, the bar has extended its closing hours to match the late night kick offs.

Decanter

12/F The St. Regis Bangkok 159, Ratchadamri Rd., 02-207-7801.
Located on the 12th floor of the five star St. Regis Hotel, this 1920s inspired wine bar is also getting in on the Euro experience with a special deal. B950 gets you two Carlsberg beers and an antipasti buffet including sausages and cold cuts. Available for every game from 10pm-3am starting this weekend, Jun 8, and running throughout the competition. For reservations, call 02-207-7801.

Song: “Uraiwan”

Artist: Rashomon
Label: San Kwan Karn Dontree
Still led by bassist, songwriter and MC, Wannasingh Prasertkul, Rashomon return with a new vocalist who gives their sound more of a head-banging electro-punk edge than the sweet-but-powerful jazz-rock featured on their first album Shin City (2010). This catchy single tells the comic tale of a third-grade boy and his puppy love for a classmate named Uraiwan.

Song: “Homeless”

Artist: Walrus
Label: Independent
Britpop-inspired Walrus have been playing clubs like Saxophone and Rod’s at Rodfai Market for a while now, but this is the band’s first foray into the music charts. Their well-received debut single, “Homeless,” is a soft-rock ballad sung in English about a guy waiting for his lover’s return.

Song: “Ta Lod Pai”

Artist: Aplin
Label: Parinam Music
This third single from Thai-singing British troubadour Ashley Kennedy’s first Thai studio album, All For You, builds on the success of last year’s “Wan Derm Derm” and “Kuen Tee Pi Sed.” There’s still the same laidback percussive-acoustic vibe, but the melody is brighter and the romantic lyrics will bring a smile to your face.

Song: “Dern Tang (Journey)”

Artist: Casinotone
Label: Comet Records
After a lengthy stint working behind-the-scenes on all sorts of projects, Jakchai “Tung” Panchanon’s one-man-band Casinotone is back. Here he enlists a couple of friends to flesh out his first single since his debut album Star City came out on Spicydisc Records way back in 2005. “Dern Tang” is a catchy slice of moody electro-pop with cavernous synths courtesy of Pok from Stylish Nonsense. Ping from Superbaker also helps out with the arrangement.

Song: “Lost Love”

Artist: Limousine feat. Jayson
Label: Limousine production
The Limousine series of compilation albums was launched by Amonpong “Nung” Tavillarp, founder of Thailand’s very first indie-music website, coolvoice.com, back in 2002. Now, to celebrate its 10th anniversary, Limousine returns with a heady mix of hip hop and r n’ b that carries a strong international flavor. First single “Lost Love” contains a few more electronic flourishes with Thai-born Filipino singer Jayson Creer laying down smooth vocals that recall Chris Brown.

Song: “Ter Kab Chan Lae Fah Tee Roo”

Artist: Miss Love feat. Fucking Hero
Label: Independent
Another comeback artist, Miss Love featured alongside Dr. Valentine (current vocalist of Terracotta) on several pop songs in the early 2000s, including “Rod Fai Fah” and “Ter Tam Hai Lok Plean Pai,” before working with hip hop acts like Buddha Bless and Joey Boy. Now, she finally unveils her first solo single, “Ter Kab Chan Lae Fah Tee Roo,” which features a few rap lines from Fucking Hero.

You Instead (Tonight You’re Mine)

Editor's Rating:

Average: 2 (1 vote)

A lot of crazy things go down at outdoor music festivals, but the drugs must have been strong for someone to think that the idea of two rock stars being handcuffed together for 24 hours would make for a convincing film plot. What You Instead shows, however, is that even a storyline so thin can be padded out when the festival in question is Scotland’s biggest, T In The Park, captured in all its muddy and spontaneous glory.
