With so many affordable (and inedible) wine bistros opening lately, we actually feel a tinge of excitement welcoming a fancy shmancy new place we can’t afford. Whale’s Belly (39 Boulevard, Tower A, 41 Sukhumvit Soi 39, 02-160-0333) is all leather chairs and white tablecloths to go with its gourmet fare: duck confit (B790), Pair of Chicken (pan-fried supreme of chicken and chicken leg roulade, B680) or Duck & Beets (smoked duck breast, pickled beetroot, needle beans and lemon vinaigrette, B420). Through May 31, get 10% off for the a la carte dishes, B500 for a three-course set lunch and B1,700 for a four-course set dinner with dishes like lacquered Chilean seabass served with orange miso emulsion, shiitake and teriyaki sauce or grilled beef tenderloin served with gratin and carrot puree.
