A smash hit musical since 1999 and spawning a 2008 film starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, “Mamma Mia” is a genuine modern cultural treasure based on ABBA’s biggest hits. Now, it’s coming to Bangkok from our very own Bangkok Community Theater (BCT).
From November 7-15 BCT will be putting on six performances of ‘Mamma Mia!’, the group’s first show since their annual Fringe Festival in May, held at the St. Andrew’s International School Sukhumvit Auditorium.
If you don’t know the plot by now, you’ve either been living under a rock or have been blessed with a lack of musical theater friends. But, to the tune of ABBA’s biggest hits, the story tells the tale of a perfect wedding on a Greek island where the bride-to-be tries to find her father out of three different men from her mother’s past to give her away on the big day.
This production will have Sophie played by Thanyathorn “Sea” Thaicharoen, groom Sky played by Parriyme, and the bride’s Donna played by Jessica Richter. The three possible dads will be Nicholas Irvine, Derek Chan, and Chris Knight. The production is from Severin Herbert, with musical direction by Tony Newman.
Of course, you can expect ABBA hits like “Dancing Queen,” “Super Trouper,” and the titular “Mamma Mia!”. The play features a run time of a little over two and a half hours with a 15 minute interval.
The six performances will run on Nov 7 and 14 with one showing per day at 7:30pm and Nov 8 and 15 with two showings per day at 2:30pm and 7:30pm.
Bangkok Community Theater has been putting on shows in Bangkok—even doing them online during Covid—since 1972 and remains the city’s longest-running and largest English-language theater group. In recent years, the group have managed around two annual productions a year, but in their storied history, they’ve brought everything from “Aladdin” panto to “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” to our fair city.
Go and support local community theater at this officially authorized production, and, well, we both know that song has been stuck in your head since reading the headline.
