Description
Vietnamese food: Pho and Viet Cuisine? That was years ago, right? In Ruamrudee Village, a newcomer, Delices, French for “delights,” is vying to woo health-conscious diners, and to be the first name that pops into peoples’ heads when talking pho.
Sharing the same complex with Coffee Beans by Dao and Circle, this three-month-old restaurant is bright and airy with lots of natural light coming in. The two-story building is styled with Chinese and Vietnamese flair along with pink tablecloths, wooden partitions, brass fans and paintings of Vietnamese wearing their typical conical straw hats. The second floor isn’t officially open yet, but downstairs alone can seat 50 diners. During lunchtime, office workers drop by for quick, comforting bowls of pho (B150), while at dinner you can expect to see mostly guests from nearby hotels, expat regulars and hiso big-hair ladies.
The owner, Nalinee Chaowisit, studied in the US, and was impressed by the Vietnamese restaurants there, so she visualized Delices as a place to find “modern Vietnamese” cuisine. Baskets of shrimp chips and greens are served as complimentary appetizers. Then you can choose your favorite dishes from an extensive menu. In addition to familiar recipes like shrimp on sugarcane sticks (B240) and nam noeng (B180), Delices also invents its own dishes such as Saigon Pizza (B220), which is like a calzone of muu yaw (Northern sausage), deep-fried sliced shallot and khao kriap pak mor (steamed flour wraps with savory minced pork) where the pizza dough is substituted by crisp khao kriap nga (rice-based chips with sesame).
On a hot day, you might want to order the “Freshy” (B100), a refreshing concoction of ripe mango, lime and mint leaves. If you prefer, there’s a small selection of Australian and Chilean wines, which are selected to complement white meat and grilled fish dishes. House wine is also available at B220 by the glass and B1,100 by the bottle.
