Located adjacent to Praduu Spa at the back of the small soi, Al Majlis is a gem of a restaurant where you’ll surely find that elegance meets comfort. The spacious tea room (Al Majils means “royal ballroom” in Arab) transports guests to the grace of Morocco with its white draperies hanging from the ceiling and the staff clad in caftan shirts. The Arabic chandelier’s light is supported by candleholders and sconces throughout that lend a warm and inviting glow to the Arabian Nights mood. Snug sofas and plump pillows complete this ideal picture for a lingering tea-sipping session.
Al Majlis’ airy courtyard is just as impressive, and perfect for romantic evenings. Sink into one of the comfy beanbags, enjoy the tranquil ambiance, and for a moment you’d think you are in Khao Yai—if not in Marrakech—but certainly not in Bangkok. Reservations are required for the coveted outdoor tables.
With all this attention directed to the setting, we were not that shocked to discover such a short menu. There are a variety of teas from England, a few light dishes and some homemade cakes. The chicken liver mousse and grilled ham and cheese sandwich are among the recommendations. The “High Tea” set includes your choice of tea, scones, sandwiches and cakes. If you’re in need of something stronger, you can order from the wine bar, but as it offers only beers and wines, don’t expect the kind of tea they drink in Scotland. French and Australian wines by the bottle available.
An urban hideaway, Al Majlis makes a great spot to kill time on a lazy afternoon or even a haunt for after-dinner drinks with friends.
