Dear Mr. KIA, My band has been playing together for three years. While I can’t say we are the best, I’m sure we’ve got what it takes. I’m a pretty talented singer, our guitarist has amazing technique, and our drummer really puts his heart into it. The thing is, we’re trying to complete our demo, but the studio we’ve been rehearsing at just went out of business. Can you recommend a good place to rehearse? I promise you’ll be the first to get an autographed copy of our CD once it’s done.—Rock & Roll Rocks
Dear RRR, Of course I know some good studios. In my younger days, I was in a band myself, and boy, how I miss being onstage. Though, not as much as I miss all those groupies! Anyway, here are some venues where you can finish your masterpiece.
Bedrock Music (Rama 9 Rd., near MCOT Bldg., 081-816-6689. Open daily 10am-11pm, bedrockdesign@hotmail.com) might only have one studio, but it comes equipped with all the instruments needed, from a piano to a drum set. You can rock till you drop for B350/hour.
Horizon Music Room (Lad Prao Soi 26, 02-938-3648, 02-938-3664. Open Mon-Sat 10am-10pm, Sun 12pm-10pm. www.horizonthailand.com) is a studio for aspiring musicians and singers. For recording, the rate is B450/hour and comes with all the instruments you need and a sound-mixing program. For rehearsals, there are four rooms available from B200-250/hour.
Tata Studio (U Center, Phayathai Rd., 02-216-5709, 085-800-6333. Open daily 10am-10pm. www.tatamag.com/tatastudio) is owned by indie darling Ta Paradox. Equipped with two guitars, two mics, a bass, drum set and amps, the small studio costs B200/hour while the bigger one is B250/hour. Aspiring bands looking for a recording and mixing studio can book this at B300/hour.
Z Zound Studio (60/19 Lad Prao Soi 71, 02-907-7621. Open daily 10am-10pm) offers two studio sizes. At B180 you get a small room for a five-person band and the big one for eight at B220. Recording services and instrument rental are available.
