The pot: Nice, simple old school style.
Appearance: Off-white and very thick—a bit like cream cheese.
Smell: A faint but pleasant aroma of apple.
Texture: Tough, almost rubbery, needs a lot of rubbing to get it usable.
Effect: Pretty immediate, this stuff is like glue, so be careful to get the style right the first time around.
Look: Good. Hard to notice you have any product in your hair.
Stamina: Impressive, even managed to withstand a trip to the gym.
L’Oreal Paris Studio Invisi’ FX Crystal Wax
Price: B219 for 75g
The pot: A little cheap and a little 80s for us with its mix of plastics.
Appearance: Clear and gooey, almost like gel.
Smell: A light hint of glue.
Texture: Wet and sticky. This is gel, just slightly thicker.
Effect: Might feel sticky on your hands but doesn’t seem to have a lot of effect on your hair.
Look: Ended up using a lot to get the slightest effect, which just made our hair look unwashed.
Stamina: Almost non-existent.
Gatsby Max Hold
Price: B72 for 75g
The pot: A little cheap.
The appearance: Like off-white shoe polish.
Smell: Citrusy, but in a toilet cleaner kind of way.
Texture: Slightly greasy to the touch but suitably waxy.
Effect: Not the worst of the bunch. Great for any kind of extreme styling.
Look: Does tend to make hair look a little greasy.
Stamina: About four hours, which is OK for a night out but not a full day at work.
Schwarzkopf Taft Maxx Look Power Wax
Price: B149 for 85g
The pot: Cute shape but whats with the bright orange?
The appearance: More face cream than wax.
Smell: A little hint of pear, nice and sweet.
Texture: It really feels like a cream.
Effect: Sets quickly and hard, does feel quite tacky though.
Look: Not 100% natural but not as greasy as some others.
Stamina: Frighteningly, this stuff got harder and more sticky as the day wore on. By evening it was almost solid but we could still style it; we just had to wash our hands afterwards.
Toni&Guy X-Wax Stick
Price: B500 for 70g
The pot: A cross between a roll-on deodrant and a dildo, with its own protective cap.
The appearance: Solid and yellow like an old candle.
Smell: Refreshingly neutral.
Texture: Like melted candle wax but tougher. Very sticky and hard to wash off.
Effect: Lets you sculpt some pretty strong shapes but hair still feels soft to the touch.
Look: Nice and natural.
Stamina: Good, lasts the day.
