BANGKOK RESTAURANT

Seiniku-ten

Amid a traditional wood-heavy vibe, made all the more cute by a lush Japanese garden located out front, the star of the show is wagyu Shimofuri beef with a whole lot of fat (the good kind) as well as the popular Matsusaka. For pockets not deep enough for wagyu, they also do NZ beef, kurobuta pork, seafood and sushi for you to grill yourself and enjoy with a house-made miso sauce.

The buzz: Located at the very end of Thonglor, Seiniku-ten sits in a shophouse dressed up to resemble a faux Japanese house with red lanterns hanging out front. The owners of the new yakiniku joint are putting the focus on the imported beef and their homemade miso sauce.

The décor: Seiniku-ten goes for a traditional wood-heavy vibe, made all the more cute by a lush Japanese garden located out front. It’s a bit of a squeeze inside at the moment, though, as the second floor is still a work in progress.

The food: As the city is flooded with yakiniku options, it generally pays to take into consideration the quality and source of the beef on offer. And here the star of the show is the pale colored Wagyu Shimofuri beef (B4,800) that contains a whole lot of fat (the good kind). Of course, there’s also the popular Matsusaka (B1,100), while the rosu beef (tenderloin, B158) makes for a less fatty option. The buffet includes the likes of New Zealand beef, kurobuta pork, seafood and sushi at B499 (soft-opening price through Feb). A must-try dessert is the dango (Japanese sweet dumplings) that you have to grill yourself. For those who work in the area, they’re also planning to serve a set lunch.

The drinks: Green tea is B38 for a la carte. Sake (hot and cold) starts from B190. Beers are Asahi and Singha (the current deal is B300 for five small bottles) while draught beer and wine are coming soon. There are two selections of sake starting from B220.

The crowds: Expats grilling alone, groups of friends and some nearby office workers. Pieng-or Mongkolkumnuankhet
