American breakfast dreams come true at this homey, intimate all-day-dining spot perched above a craft beer bar. Let the tantalizing scents from the open kitchen guide you through their extensive line-up of morning classics, like buttery pancakes drenched with maple syrup; three egg-omelets loaded with cheese, peppers and sausage; country potatoes that are to die for; and bottomless, self-serve American drip coffee—all of which are available until late.

This review took place in April 2019 and is based on a visit to the restaurant without the restaurant's knowledge. For more on BK's review policy, click here.

Navigating the dark staircase to Hair of the Dog beer bar’s second floor can be tricky, but you’ll be rewarded with this homey, intimate all-day-dining spot, where American breakfast dreams come true.

Strings of fairy lights hang over warm wood tables that are regularly filled with early morning crowds, as vintage posters, colorful home knick-knacks and ‘80s background music coalesce for an eclectic but welcoming vibe.

Let the tantalizing scents from the open kitchen guide you through their extensive line-up of morning classics, from the loaded Breakfast Story’s (B300) triple stack of billowy pancakes, seasoned pan-fried potatoes, scrambled eggs and crispy bacon strips, to the Full Stack’s (B250) pile of four spongey, plate-sized pancakes that breathe in maple syrup as if they have life of their own—though they may not quite live up to the legendary buttery standards of Clinton Street or Chu, they’re still more than satisfying.

The gooey, custard-soaked interior of the sugar and syrup drenched French toast (B250) can be ordered in PB&J flavor (B280), though we recommend pairing it with sides of bacon (B50) and scrambled eggs (B30) for the perfect salty edge.

Come at lunch and you’ll be tempted to defect to the hearty, crispy chicken burger (B300), slathered with flavorful buffalo wing sauce and topped with crunchy coleslaw.

Offset all that fried stuff with a healthy Green (kale, cucumber, apple, lime and ginger, B150) or Red (beetroot, apple and carrot, B150) juice—all freshly pressed with no sugar added. Coffee here comes in the almost unheard of self-serve bottomless variety (B80).

Put simply, the experience of eating at Breakfast Story is very much like eating breakfast at home on the couch on Sunday morning—relaxed and comfortable. Though the high cost may seem incongruous with the casual style, the portions are so generous you could easily share between two.
