Eleven years since opening to the public, the venerable Siam City Hotel’s Japanese outlet, Kamon, has been completely transformed from stereotypical Rising Sun décor to the contemporary look that’s all the rage these days. In addition to a new sushi bar, there are open-view teppanyaki counters and four tatami rooms offering privacy to the politicians, diplomats and high-ranking government officials who frequent the Siam City. It is customers like these who can afford prestige items like melt-in-your afford mouth Matsuzaka sirloin, Kobe sirloin and foie gras, prepared teppanyaki-style. The kitchen is overseen by Chef Masahiko Yamazaki, an expert in Kyoto cuisine who honed his skills working for the famed 280-year-old Miokichi chain. More popular than the subtle Kyoto dishes among local diners, however, are “special crazy sushi” fusion rolls like Tokyo maki (shrimp, crab stick, avocado and asparagus covered with fresh salmon and salmon roe), anago roll (avacado, cucumber, crab stick and egg and topped with eel), and tuna salad wrapped in rice paper. Wash it all down with a blended matcha (cold green tea) or house umeshu (plum wine).
