Sawaree Terrace
08-1455-7696. Open daily 4pm-1am.
This white two-story bar and gallery faces the street on the corner of Co Co Walk. It’s a place where you can expect to find young adults chilling, drinking and dining despite the fact that the location is so close to a university. Soft indie Thai and inter songs are selected by the owner himself although you won’t be grooving and moving at this particular bar. And every customer gets a free bowl of nuts upon ordering drinks.
In-ning Café
02-656-6378. Open daily 6pm-midnight.
There’s a red theme here, although besides that there’s nothing else to write home about décor-wise—the wooden stools and seats are like every other tiny bar in the city. A house band plays light and easy listening music each night except for Sun. Don’t be alarmed if people from other tables come to talk to you; it’s most likely the super-friendly management team.
Porn Sura
08-1374-4749. Open daily 7pm-1am.
This bar features a loft-like décor in a dark, tiny room. There is a brighter area outdoors if you’d prefer less noise from the bar crowd, although you must be able to deal with the heat. It is a very casual bar and the staff often drinks with the regular customers. There’s live music each Wed, Fri and Sat nights.
U-Turn
08-1811-7147. Open daily 6pm-1am.
You might feel like you’re in a sofa store if there wasn’t the bar sign at the entrance. There are sofas everywhere—and nothing else. No stage, no live music and no décor to speak of. You can just rest your behind on the fluffy sofa and listen to indie Thai tunes played by bartenders. Or if this is not your scene, then just make a u-turn.
The Prince
08-6555-6873. Open daily 5:30pm-1am.
No air-conditioning, so you can feel the real temperature of Bangkok. Featuring a spacey retro décor, you can listen to indie, ska and soft tunes while you’re relaxing from a hectic day. Sorry, no dancing, but you can play pool. The five-year-old bar serves night crawlers in the mood to take it easy and offers a better choice of music compared to its neighbors.
Hok Klom
08-6668-8823. Open daily 6pm-1am.
Live folk music performed nightly from 9-11pm. After that, the house band plays whatever they like. You can lie back on the beach chairs outside or sit on comfy sofas inside while enjoying cold drinks to cool off from your hot day.
Room Bar
08-1264-9564. Open daily 5pm-1am.
A second home for people to hang out and relax in. There are simple red and white décor elements along with mini stools and sofas so you can feel like you’re sitting at your friend’s house. There’s a variety of music here as well, and a house band performs every Wed, Fri and Sat.
Chilling House Café
08-6324-8084. Open daily 6pm-1am
A vintage clubhouse style spot for people to relax at and enjoy a nice selection of food and drink. Perfect as a social gathering place with friends. Easy listening and commercial music give you an opportunity to have a pleasant night after a long day.
Club 5
08-1455-6426. Open daily 5pm-2am.
A five-year-old pub reminiscent of a Rasta-style joint is mostly packed with university students. Thai, English and luuk thung songs are played on request. Only pay B10/person for ice buckets all night—seems like they’re proponents of the sufficiency economy.
