BAR

Firefly

A jazzy hang in Langsuan with inventive cocktails.

The buzz: Award-winning bartender Dicky Hartono slings cocktails as the bar manager of Firefly, and he’s experimenting with a new cocktail menu. Formerly of The Back Room in the Philippines (which placed in Asia’s Best Bars in 2019, 2020, 2021), Dicky Hartono takes cocktails seriously.

The vibe: This place is sharp, shining, and jazzy, a first floor bar with rooftop vibes. Tuesday through Sunday vocalist Joy Voeth, guitarist Toby Armstrong, and others play crowd-pleasing jazz hits with chill, laidback class. It’s an intimate stage area, so it’s a part-of-the-show atmosphere.

The drinks: The new menu is bold and not afraid to steer into fruity and smoky flavors. Whiskey lovers will enjoy the Firefly No. 2 (B450) from the new cocktail menu, an unusual combination of Johnnie Walker Black Label and passionfruit alongside Jerry Thomas bitters, citrus, and Earl Grey tea. There are two notable “smoke bubble” cocktails for those of you who want your drinks Instagram-friendly. The first (off the new menu) is The Lady in Red No. 2 (B450), featuring Tanqueray, blueberry, strawberry, elderflower bitters, citrus, umeshu, and, of course, a bubble to stab. There’s also the Pop the Bubble (B500) from the old menu, a tequila forward drink that made our list of best tequila cocktails in Bangkok. For something bitter and fruity, try the More Banana Please (B500), mixing Flor De Cana with banana, L’Apero, and campari.

The food: The bar food is a simple menu of six snacks. On our trip we had the beef tartare (B570)—a moreish salty mix of pickle, egg, and delightful sourdough—and the marinated Canadian lobster roll (B980) on a buttery brioche bun. The fun dish, though, was the spicy umami tiger prawns (B280) skewered on grilled banana chili and corn on the cob. Veggies can opt for the fresh raw veggies (B160).

The crowd: As you can guess by the location and the prices, this is for the hi-sos and the jetset. That said, a drummer and more joins the Joy’s jazzy trio on the weekends and there are regulars who keep coming back for the meditative music and swish vibes.

Why we’d come back: There’s a lot of competition among the galaxy of five star hotels and their bar offerings, but it’s rare to find one that puts music front-and-center. The cocktails make the bar, but the band and Joy’s infectious smile make the venue.
