The buzz: Hoping to break the stranglehold that British and Irish pubs seem to have on this town, the team behind Coyote and Molly Malone’s have decided to add an Australian pub to the scene. Taking over what used to be Twisted Republic on Sukhumvit Soi 11, they satisfy those two great Aussie traditions of beer and sport without falling into the normal theme pub trap—no marsupial toy animals or boomerangs here.
The décor: Forget the standard image of dingy dimly lit pubs, because this antipodean establishment manages to create a bright and airy atmosphere thanks to the high-ceilinged alfresco bar/seating area out the front. Its corrugated iron finish contrasts with the freshness of the pine topped tables to give it a very modern feel. The only thing that’s a little in-your-face is the Australian map-shaped sign and the figure-hugging green and gold outfits sported by the female staff. There are two projectors and several flat screen TVs to satisfy sports fans while the second floor, with its own bar and a dining area, plays host to private functions and parties. Beer fans will love the ice trough which runs throughout the bar and the choice of Aussie ales on offer.
The music: The play list alternates between Kylie and Silverchair in the early evening, before the lively 7-member Filipino band take over, dishing out chart toppers and 90s classics from 9:30pm to 1am every night except Sun.
The crowd: It’s already proving popular with Sukhumvit expats, sports nuts, pre-Bed Supperclub/Q Bar crowds and Aussie-philes.
The price: Cocktails B195, beer B140-240, wine B195 (by glass) and B1,100-4,850 (by bottle), whisky B150-230.
Why you’ll come back: The Aussie beers, the ice trough and the live footy and AFL matches.
