The disappearing Singapore institution, the garang guni man, has been Singapore’s champion of recycling for as long as we have been a nation. Although not doing it for altruistic purposes, nonetheless his efforts to recycle, although unquantifiable, are to be appreciated—he even got a few dollars out of it!
Second hand book stores like Books Galore (#05-107 Far East Plaza, 14 Scotts Rd., 6732-8773) have been around for a long time too. Saviours of cash-strapped students, bookworms and, by accident, the environment, there is little doubt that these book stores are here to stay.
Another old stalwart of the whole recycling culture here are the second hand specialists such as the Salvation Army (check out www.sec.org.sg and click on the Thrift Stores link). Known for their choice vintage picks, their contribution to the environment is almost incidental, but where else can you find some truly unique pieces and claim you are being green at the same time?
