D'Sens
The French-imported eatery has all the oomph one might expect. However, the beaded curtain at the entrance is just annoying. One customer actually got tangled up in it—he didn’t look too happy. What we enjoy the most is the male restroom. The urinal is dug into the floor, against a floor-to-ceiling window, bestowing the view of the city—yes, it’s like pissing on Bangkok (as if you’re a politician). In the dimly lit restaurant, the design in ultra chic. To the right is a square counter bar dug into the floor, with loungy sofas for supping on cocktails amid soft chill-out tunes. To the left is the well laid-out dining area; we recommend the seats by the window. The meal starts off with the obligatory selection of warm breads and a couple of complimentary green asparagus shooters, a palate cleansing starter known in French as amouse bouche. At first, we actually thought the helpful waiter said, “boob boob.” And though the shooters were refreshingly delicious, we’re still not sure if we might prefer the “boob boob.” The starters include cepe and duck liver ravioli, avocado emulsion and sesame honey caramel (B480). A tip: Don’t just eat the ravioli without the potatoes, or the crab without the avocado. Each dish tastes best when mixing all the offerings in one bite. The same goes for the main course: half lobster, roasted a la palancha, macaroni gratin, truffle flavored vegetables, fruits compote (B1,300) and beef filet brochette with lard and ceps, passion fruit wine reduction, onions confit, crispy potato galette (B950). The combination of succulent lobster meat, flavorful gratin and veggies and zesty compote just dance the lambada in our mouth. Regarding the beef, our courteous waiter actually recommended the lamb, saying that the chef believes a beef dish’s taste is largely dependent upon the quality of the beef, therefore offering little challenge to the chef. A lamb dish, however, allows the chef to fully display his/her expert touch. Such pomposity! We love it! Just for that, D’Sens deserves an extra star. And by the way, a meal here is not complete without the delightful chocolate coulat with lemon flavored caramel, hazelnut biscuit and yogurt (B280). Who can ask for anything more? Oh yeah, can we get rid of the darn bead curtain?
