Description

Opened: Oct 2007

The buzz: Izakaya (technically a restaurant for drinking) leaves the Japanese ghettos of Sukhumvit and sets up shop on a mini-RCA strip in Town in Town.

The décor: Traditional Japanese meets street art. Blond wood is the mainstay of this décor while graffiti and video projections bring a younger touch. Cooks are visible at their tepanyaki and sushi bars while a tiny little stage is stuck in one corner, next to the wide flight of starts leading to the second floor where dim light and graffiti will get you into more of a drinking mood. There are some tables outside, in front.

The music: Double bass, guitar, violin (is this a chamber orchestra?) and bango drums offer a refreshing alternative to guitar and bass bands (early evening) before an in house DJ continues to play bossanova along with the usual hits. Later, another band plays pop in a jazzy style. No hard-ass beats here.

The crowd: A lot of people who work in Town in Town’s media/fashion/entertainment industries. Maybe a few final year university students, in case you’re looking for fresher meat, but that’s not really the point, here.

The price: Sake B350, whiskey B1,150-1,350, mixers B45-60, beer B120-150 and Yohii (soju yogurt and rice wine) B120.

Why you’ll come back: Because you like Thai AND Japanese and Yohii has found the Thai-friendly middle ground with its spicy dishes and sweet Yohii rice wine yogurt.
