The closest thing to Charlie’s Chocolate Factory you can have in Bangkok has to be Kakao Café. You might not have Willy Wonka taking you on a ride through a chocolate river but you’ll definitely get a similar chocolatey feeling here. Located at the entrance of President Park in Sukhumvit Soi 24, Kakao Café is a two-story house-like hangout for those who look for the perfect alternative to the usual Starbucks sipping session. Owner Chaturada Dhanasobhon, or Kay, who has a background in design, fused contemporary Victorian décor with the classic sense of chocolate to maintain chocolate’s characteristic of eternal elegance.

“Our store concept is about ‘emotional culture.’ Chocolate is tied into every special occasion you can think of:weddings, Valentine’s Day, birthdays, anniversaries, etc. People give chocolates to signify their love for one another,” explained Kay.

The simple combination of fresh strawberries and melted chocolate is made extraordinary by choco chef Nick Lam from Singapore with chocolates imported directly from Belgium and France. The Frozen Mousse Brownie with warm milk is a good choice to start your evening. “People are here after dinner for dessert with friends before they head out again,” said Kay, who wants the café to be the place where chocolate lovers come in and relax. “Kakao is a living room in the city for people who actually know how to appreciate fine chocolates.”

If you’re looking for a place between a stuffy dinner and a wild night out, Kakao serves the purpose.
