The word “tranquil” doesn’t get tossed around too frequently in Bangkok, but Fisherman’s Seafood Restaurant is worthy of it. The combination of the sounds of the splashing river water, the gentle warm breeze, and the sun slipping down behind the temples along the Chao Phraya makes for a lovely and relaxed atmosphere. Formerly located in the pre-renovated Gaysorn during the 1980s, Fisherman’s Seafood Restaurant re-opened six months ago near the Maharaj Pier. Sit outside with the breeze under the blue lighting, or inside with the candlelight and jazz. Fisherman’s Seafood caters to a mixed crowd of Thais and tourists and the menu features traditional Thai/Chinese dishes, mostly seafood, with a twist. For example, the crispy and succulent deep-fried sea bass fried with a homemade fish sauce is accompanied by a jazzed up somtam—a fusion recipe with coconut palms, green apples, carrots and cashews, providing a nice crunch. The cockles are grilled over lava rocks instead of charcoal, providing a slow-roasted effect, served with spicy seafood dipping sauce (if only they were bigger). Based on the website, it looks like the menu reaches far beyond the street-stall style food that we were served. Regardless, if you go there to eat hiso or loso, the setting will put you in the mood for a few libations. Beers, cocktails available.
