Description

Opened: February 2008
The buzz: On the grounds of the late Astra, 808, despite the overhaul and the name change, remains RCA’s flagship when it comes to electronic dance music as it boasts the biggest sound system in Bangkok and a dazzling interna-tional DJ lineup.
The décor: With a stage for the DJ rising above the dance floor, 808 elevates the electro spinner to the rank of royal-ty. Nothing distracts from the veneration of the jockey:dark, straight lines compose a kind of non-decor that is a welcome break from the funky furniture and beautifying chandeliers ubiquitous elsewhere on the strip. The focus, here, is on lighting and sound.
The music: Electronic, electronic, electronic and, on slow weekday nights, slightly more mainstream hip-hop. Tiesto, Derrick May and Ellen Alien have all mixed here already.
The crowd: Electro-addicts tend to be young, ready to party hard and drawn from an international (dek inter/expat) crowd.
The price: Cocktails B160-220, bottles B1,000-3,000.
Why you’ll come back: Finally a club that sounds like a club—not like an extremely loud radio playing Rihanna.
