Kathmandu’s tourist enclave, Thamel, is a maze of narrow, winding, ancient stone alleyways, where pashmina shawl shop owners light incense in the streets, and the soothing Tibetan mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum” echoes from music stores occupying every third shophouse. Bakeries and beer gardens are full of outdoorsy tourists––who are teeming with excitement for their upcoming trek, or sore and exhausted after finishing. Bicycle rickshaws narrowly pass street vendors selling colorful wool hats; a reminder of the frigid temperatures of the Nepal’s upper Himalayan altitudes. (read more...)
