One day Carlos Contente woke up and realized he could reach more people with public graffiti art than with photocopied underground comics or painting. Since then he’s spent years stenciling minimalist self portraits of himself all over Brazil and has recently completed graffiti murals at Din Daeng National Housing and Bed Supperclub for the Bangkok International Arts Festival. Dear Mr. KIA, Suicidal though this may prove, I’ve decided to resort to a mountain bike, rather than face the daily mayhem of Bangkok traffic. There are, in this city, still some of us left who are man enough to defy diesel clouds, kamikaze buses, and egotistic Benz drivers. Vientiane may be the capital of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, but the charm it exudes is definitely small-town. (There’s scarcely a building taller than four stories.) And just like in Luang Prabang, much of that charm is colonial. Somboon is a hugely successful, long-running franchise that has been in business since 1969 and now has four outlets around the city. But success does not necessarily mean it’s any good, and, at least in the case of the most famous branch on the corner of Suriyawongse and Narathiwat-Ratchanakarin, we can only think of one reason (maybe two) to visit.
