Science of Love and Theory of Sweet Love Turns Sour in Four Years
Plot - The Science of Love
Breakup of celebrities’ love relationships in the local music and entertainment scene has been making headlines literally everyday recently, providing the media a banquet of news and gossips to thrive on, and not to mention countless of the ends to romantic relationship of people in general, which make the Thai society increasingly filled with broken homes. Sweet loves can turn sour in a blink of an eye. Some couples made it together only for two to four years. Four is apparently the number: it coincides with divorce figures in many societies and cultures, which reveal that separations of single-child parents took place during the period of two to four years, and most frequently during the fourth year.
A question then comes to the fore: why do people fall so deeply and madly in love during the early stage of their romantic relationship, and then feel literally nothing for each other when the relationship fades away? Science has an explanation for us.
Scientists have found that lots of dopamine, which is a hormone and neurotransmitter associated with the pleasure system of the brain, is produced during early time of relationship when love flourishes. Over the course of time, less and less dopamine is produced, providing an opportunity for other neurotransmitter like oxytocin and endorphin to take over. It seems as if nature uses dopamine to trap us into the pit of “romantic love” first, and then turn the feeling into “attachment” with use of other hormones, a stage where excitement is relatively lessened. The entire process takes about four years, after which the relationship is prone to divorce and separation.
This scientific explanation is the inspiration behind short film “Dopamine” by director Chukiat “Ma-Deaw” Sakweerakul, who reaped three awards from the most recent Thailand National Film Association Awards (Supannahong Awards) Ceremony and many other film awards from his blockbuster “Rak Haeng Siam” aka “The Love of Siam”. Director Ma-Deaw has created this short exclusively for the One-2-Call! iD Showcase event in the month of love. One-2-Call! iD Showcase is a campaign that promotes the freedom of teens to express their creativity and inspired work under the concept “shop, see, and show the freedom of creativity” on the full space of Siam Square Soi 3 the last Friday of every month throughout 2008, each time under a different theme, and all at no cost to participants.
Chukiat “Ma-Deaw” Sakweerakul obtained his status as a new-generation idol because of his early success. He was previously known as a rising director of horror movies like “Khon Phee Pisaj” (literally translates as “human beings, ghosts, and devils”) and “Sibsam Game Sayong” (literally translates as “thirteen: game of horror”). But he made an impressive directorial twist with his teen romance “Rak Haeng Siam”, which has won him critical and public acclaim for the love story of teens who hang around in Siam Square – a reflection of part of his teen life as one of the Siam Square boys. The movie is not only about the love of boys and girls, but also contemplates on the good and bad sides of love in the Thai society,
Director Ma-Deaw reflects on his creation of “Dopamine”, saying that he was inspired by a scientific documentary that he happened to see as a person who loves to keep learning from books, watching TV, reading news, and going to the movies. When approached by One-2-Call! to make a short, he thought that could be a good opportunity to learn and experiment with new ideas and techniques in order to keep developing. A scientific approach to love story telling, “Dopanime” is a sci-fi romantic comedy that integrates computer graphics. The film describe the reaction within our body when we fall in love, during which our body produces a hormone called “dopamine” to stimulate the part of our brain that is associated with pleasure, resulting in a synchronized process of learning and remembrance. The story is told in the point of view of Professor Dr. Louis Maurer about the love of two teenagers, Phung and Tor, starting from the time they get to know each other until they become each other’s date. The story of Phung and Tor flashes in turn with the story of another couple, starting from the time when the relationship is full of romance, when love turns sour, until the day they part their ways. Every development in their relationship is linked to a scientific recitation in a parallel fashion.
“The film tells a scientific story and thoughts in an entertaining way and encourages the audience to map the story onto their real life. It also offers a discreet conclusion of making decisions about love that I would like everyone to see,” says Ma-Deaw.
“Dapomine” is starred by the lead actor and actress from “Rak Haeng Siam”, Witwisit “Pitch” Hirunwongkul and Nong Tarn. The short is broadcasted over the Internet on www.one-2-call.ais.co.th.
