Vera-Alien, Go

Vera-Alien, Go

October 24th, 2008

In the exhibition Vera-Alien, M.L. Saksin Karsamsun uses alien figurines as a way of representing how we, as humans, tend to view each other, as demonstrated in the piece Go.

Medium and technique used:
Acrylic and Oil.

What’s the story behind the piece?
Buffalos are a sign of stupidity in traditional Thai belief, for example: the well-known slang of “katoey kway” is used to mock homosexuals. But to me, buffalos are a sign of stability, warmth and strength. The alien, who has the desire to travel, is the subject of my paintings. He gets on the buffalo and tells the buffalo where to go. It’s up to the audience to imagine exactly where they want the alien and the buffalo to go.

What’s the inspiration behind the piece?
The inspiration comes from my experience as a monk. I learnt to let go of sorrow and meditate. In turn, I was also able to learn the processes of mixing colors, shapes, pressures, spaces, textures and stories.

Why should the audience come to view this piece?
Art pieces have the capacity to increase your intelligence and psyche. It is a way to increase concentration as you get to consider and dissect each concept. The intention of creating this piece was to release my own grief. Grief exists in everyone’s nature. When creating these paintings, my mind was calm. I want people to feel the way that I did.
