Trippin’ on Ice (Cream)

Trippin’ on Ice (Cream)

October 8th, 2008

Fancy frozen delights put to the test. By Mim Koletschka.

If good ol’ Walls ice cream is not chic enough for your delicate palate, there’s no shortage of upscale options. In a completely blind taste test, the BK crew “grudgingly” accepted to pig out on 14 tubs of vanilla and chocolate ices to determine which hiso brands deserve their “premium” prices.

Ete Swiss Chocolate
It has a rich texture, but that’s pretty much it, its chocolate aroma is incredibly lacking. B179/400g

Ete Vanilla Bean
There is a weird quality to it, not exactly the sweetness you expect from vanilla, it’s almost coconut-like. A bit on the bitter side, leaving an unpleasant aftertaste. B45/85g

Amaltery Brandy Alexander
Booze and ice cream is a great idea, but this particular combination just doesn’t work. Yuck. B410/500g, B150/160g

Mövenpick Vanilla Dream
It has a very rich texture but, sadly, its taste isn’t as rich. B125/95g

Mövenpick Swiss Chocolate
Not bitter enough—from a Swiss brand we expected a real kick. And there are too many chips, the texture of which we don’t appreciate. B125/95g

Häagen Dazs Vanilla BK Pick!
Yummy, creamy goodness, but not excessively rich either. (Almost) everyone’s favorite. B329/473ml

Häagen Dazs Chocolate
A solid chocolate ice cream with a hint of mocha and a great aroma. B329/473ml

Tuscanini Vanilla
It tastes like cheap Thai ice-cream—very Walls-esque. B199/300g

Tuscanini Dark Chocolate
It grows on you after a few more licks, but could be too sweet for chocolate lovers. B199/300g

New Zealand Natural Vanilla Classic
It smells like cheap vanilla with an artificial taste to it. But then the label reads “natural.” Are we so used to artificial flavors that natural tastes wrong? B279/473ml

New Zealand Natural Chocolate Ecstasy
It has a great creamy texture to it, but its taste is average. With its milky flavor, it’s easy chocolate for kiddies. B279/473ml

Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Fudge Brownie
The yummy brownie chunks make the texture awesome but the chocolate itself is nothing special. B299/473ml

Iberry Chocolate BK Pick!
Not too bitter, not too sweet—just right. Its strong chocolate flavor makes it our favorite. B210/450g.

Iberry Natural Vanilla
Much too bland but not unpleasant. B210/450g
