Tiger Translate, Hype, Glaz Bar, and Global Deejays.
February 23rd, 2008Tiger Rocks
On Feb 9, at Suan Lum Night Bazaar, dek naews and lovers of indie rock got together for Tiger Beer’s big event, Tiger Translate. Bands Moderndog, The Richman Toy, Scrubb and The Radio Dept. (from Sweden) were interspersed with competing “pub bands” that, for once, weren’t playing covers. The winner: Circle 22 (they’ll get to play in London, woohoo!) But there was more to this concert than the very long outdoor stage. Street artists were in one corner, graphic designers in another, music label So:On had its own experimental “lab” in a big black box (the bands there were fantastic) and there was even some short films being screened. Kudos to Tiger who brought us so many great bands in one night. Keep up the good work and hopefully this event will be back soon.
New Name, Old Story
There once was a bar in Thonglor that was called Ice Bar and it had a tiny little bar made of ice. But with global warming and all, the little chunk of frozen water melted away. Smack on the little puddle it left behind came Raz Bar. Raz had a giant Motorola Razr keypad hanging on its wall and people called it silly and commercial, which isn’t very nice but not entirely untrue. But then came, on one clear morning, an invite to the grand opening of Hype, located at the same spot as Raz Bar. So, we thought, aha, the evil Raz is gone. Unfortunately, it was all a devious trick. There was no hype and the ugly monster keypad is still guarding the toilets. We’d been had!
Cock’s and Cones
Last time we were down at Glaz Bar, at the Plaza Athenee, it was to stuff ourselves with some bite-sized Thai tapas—good stuff. Now they’re launching a new promotion called Afterwork Cocktails and Cones. Yes, we like to eat while we drink and thanks for keeping cocktail hour snacking creative. There are four mouth-watering cocktails (with Patron
tequila, DH Krahn Gin, Leblon Cachaca or Fantinel Prosecco) created for the occasion by the familiar Swedish mixologists from Flow. B450 gets you free flow drinks and tapas for the two hours the event lasts. Too bad this promotion will be available just once a month: Feb 28, Mar 27 and Apr 24, 6:30-8:30pm only. Mark your calendars.
Disco DJs
A couple of years ago when the house remix “Sound of San Francisco” by DJ duo Taylor and Flow was released, it was such a hit that some Thai DJs still play it today. Then they did their magic on “What a feeling?” and that was another smashing dancefloor hit. Well the two DJs will be mixing at Global Deejays, brought to you by Santika on Mar 6. B600 (bwfore Feb 29), 800 (1 drink). Give them a ring at 02-711-5886.
