August 15th, 2008

Dear Mr. KIA, With the economy going downhill fast, my reduced budget means I can’t splurge on clothing like I used to. I’m so tired of wearing the same clothes over and over again, plus it’s so embarrassing being seen in the same outfi t twice. Can you help me fi nd a way of giving my wardrobe a new look without costing me a fortune?

Thanks

—Shopper Girl Gone Poor

Dear SGGP, as a particularly natty dresser myself, (just check out my sharp suit), I completely understand how clothes make the man (or in this case, woman). But while you have to cut your cloth to suit your means there are still ways of updating your outfits without having to splash out on pieces from the latest runway collections. One solution is to transform your existing wardrobe by giving those tired threads a color makeover.

Cleanmate Dryclean & Laundry (Parking area, 3/F, Carrefour Rama 4, 2929 Rama 4 Rd., 02-930-4971. www.cleanmate.net) only accepts linen, silk or cotton. Darker articles may require bleaching (a service they do provide). Rates start from B300.

Vorabhas D. (82/174 Soi Ekachai 10, Ekachai Rd., 02-893-8893. www.voraabhasd.co.th) offers online shopping for Dylon products straight from the UK. Their dyes come in over 58 colors, which lets you give your wardrobe a much needed revamp. Look for the Dylon Pre-Dye (B50) to remove any existing strong colors before you get your hands on their Dylon Multi-purpose Dye (B50) or the Dylon Cold Dye (B64). Their products can also be found at most B2S stores (try Siam Paragon or The Emporium). Dyeing tips and tricks are available on their website.

Asia Books (2/F, Siam Paragon, 991/1 Rama 1 Rd., 02-610-9609/-14,www.asiabooks.com) has a few DIY books on dyeing your own clothes. Try Dyes & Paints: A Hands-On Guide to Coloring Fabric (B1,066) by Elin Noble, which not only gives you all the technical info, but it’s also easy to follow with clear illustrations. For you hippies, grab Tie Dye! The How-To Book (B381.25) by Virginia Gleser, a lighter read for bohemian beginners.
