Dear Mr. KIA: My teddy bear freak of a friend is having a teddy bear themed birthday party next week; guess what she wants as a present? The thing is, since I am one of her very best friends, I just can’t give her one of those mass-produced, generic teddies that can be found in almost any mall in Bangkok. I wan mine to stand out. I could have ordered one from the internet, but that’s just too much of a hassle. I know I could also buy materials and make one completely from scratch—but I simply have no idea how to go about it. So I was wondering, where can I get her a unique and original teddy bear? Lame though it is, I want my bear to win “Best Bear at the Party.” Please help.—Bear With It

Dear BWI: Wow, a teddy bear themed party: you should be glad you don’t have to dress up as one. Let me ask you one thing: just how old is she? Twelve? It’s quite surprising you’ve got the strength to attend—but that only shows what a good friend you are, and for that I salute you. Here’s your solution: If you want your present to be unique, reconsider making it yourself. There are quite a number of quick, easy ways you can do that without having to learn Handicrafts 101.

Build-A-Bear Workshop The worldwide bear-making store is a lot of fun. You don’t have to work from scratch, just pick out one of their empty bear bodies and you can stuff it with a birthday wish audio box to customise it. At the store, there’s an array of teddy-sized clothing so you can dress up the bear any way you want. A birth certificate is also issued once your bear is “born”.

Tiny Bear is Thailand’s answer to Build-A-Bear. The selection of clothing and accessories for your tiny friend might not be as impressive, but the price is much easier to take. Also comes with the all-important birth certificate.

Loft is a great place to hunt down birthday gifts. If you go down the teddy bear aisle, you’ll see some cool DIY teddy bear kits so you can try your hand at stitching up your own fluffy friend. There are different sizes, and some come pre-sewn for your convenience. All you have left to do is the stuffing.
