Issue #263: Live Music

Stars Align, Final Destination, Groovy Friday, Third Time's a Charm, KOI turns 90

On Oct 11, Bangkok’s best (well, only) electronic online radio, Underground Bangkok, will leave its tiny shophouse studio on Khao San and head to Gazebo Sukhumvit (B350 1 drink, non-member, B200, member) for a one night-only party with the “UB Allstars”. Ooh, a chance to see DJs of Sunday Sessions fame Wrong Disco (with the real DJ Will, see below), K-Natz and Katsui in the flesh. Open bar until 10pm but the fun doesn’t stop there, thanks to their extended opening hours!

Final Destination
Austin Bar in Khao San was once packed with young backpackers, local teens and farang-chasers. Then Austin became Unicorn, a bar for “metrosexual” (cough, cough) men. That didn’t last long, either,
but now there’s D.O.S (Destination of Satisfaction), offering live rock and 80s rock tunes by house bands. Bored with Oh Bar or can’t afford to squeeze yourself into Deep Bar, give D.O.S a chance.

Groovy Friday
The joint on Lang Suan Balcony, Monopoly Bar (08-1486-3450) is a victim of the over-crowded bar on the ground floor. To encourage you to climb upstairs, their new theme night, Disco Monopoly, every
Fri, will have an all-night open bar for B900. At the decks: DJ Will (not the “real” DJ Will, some other guy). Speaking of real DJs (if you like Aoki-style electro hip hop), 808 has a better Fri free-flow deal, anyway, B450 for girls and B650 for guys. If you’re not feeling disco disco, V9 Wine Bar (02-238-1991) has launched a Fri Latina Night with salsa tunes from DJ Jorge Bernal. Disco or Latino—we’re overwhelmed by the originality of these new propositions.

Third Time’s a Charm
If you missed the two previous Hed Kandi parties in town, Q Bar (02-252-3274) has a catch up session with Andrew Daniels (DJ), Lady Victoria (saxophonist) and a gospel vocalist Peyton on Sep 26 (B800, 2 drinks). As the cops are still busy at the Government House, we’re confident this one won’t shut down at 1am again.

KOI turns 90
KOI bar is turning three. The bash is on Sep 27 and it’s open to all as long as you fork out B500 (1 drink). What’s a few hundred for the chance to mingle with hisos and models who didn’t pay to get in. DJ Tom Morgan (UK) will spin “discotecmusic.” (We don’t know what that is either but don’t tell anyone.) But, hey, three bar years is like 90 in human years so happy birthday KOI! Keep feeding the anorexic and we’ll keep on coming to ogle them.
