Shang Palace, Buddhi Belly, Gelatoni and Kobe
May 14th, 2008Olympic Spirit
The torches have come and gone (except for the “missing” ones), but you can still celebrate the Olympic spirit at Shang Palace (Shangri-La Hotel, 89 Soi Wat Suan Plu, New Road, 02-206-8762. Open daily 11:30am-2:30pm, 6:30pm-10:30pm) with their Road to Beijing festival. Through May 28, diners can sample special dishes from the cities hosting the games, including Beijing’s chicken imperial-style (a whole chicken at B1,000). Now surely there’s a Tibetan food promotion out there somewhere in response?
Wise Yogurt
Buddhi, a Buddhist and Hindu concept of spiritual mindfulness and wisdom, is apparently now part of a low-fat diet. Buddhi Belly (15 Silom Rd., BTS Sala Daeng. Open Sun-Thu 10am-10pm, Fri-Sat 10am-3am) feeds the health-conscious with frozen yogurt. Prices start from B55 for a small cup of plain yogurt to B185 for a large one; toppings of fresh fruits, nuts and chocolate are B10 each. It’s baffl ing; we never knew enlightenment could be found in frozen yogurt.
More Frozen Low-Fat Goodness
The “healthy” Italian ice-cream shop, Gelatoni (G/F, The Esplanade, Ratchadaphisek Rd., 02-641-3108. Open daily 10am-10pm) rolls out homemade tastes spanning some 90 flavors (B45 per scoop) that include sparkling wine, black sesame and chocolate river. With such exotic names, neither Italian nor homemade comes to mind but, according to Gelatoni, the health-factor is there: their ice-cream has 4-6% fat while normal ice cream has 10-20%.
Kobe Relocated
Popular among students and offi ce workers alike, Kobe (156/21 Phetchaburi Rd., 02-611-1001. Open daily 11am-11pm), which was originally situated in Siam Square, has moved to Phetchaburi Road. The new space, which just opened its doors on May 1, still serves Japanese food designed for the Thai palate. Available all day are its famous cheap set lunches (starting at B139).
