In At First & Last Memory with Honey-Blood, Ruangsak has transformed the gallery’s empty white room into an artwork that interacts with its audience. Why? Because he’s heartbroken!

Medium: It’s a site-specific video installation. I always rely on the surrounding area. I have a video projection but also a light bulb activated by a sensor when someone walks past it. On both sides of this setup are my heartbeat graphs from the days when I was working on this project. On some days it was so low as if I was nearly dying. I use black and white photos because I don’t believe that our memory is in color. We might think we see color, but in our heads, how can we be sure we remember the actual color we saw?

Inspiration: We experience things in 3D and over a period of time—that’s the breadth of our experience. The video indicates the past while the photos here are my memory. I blended two photos in one because I think that memory doesn’t come in the form of one picture but of a mix. What makes this show complete is the observers who will activate the sensor and get the experience.

How to read the artwork: Stay through the whole presentation and ask yourself how you feel with it.
