Red Alert

Red Alert

January 30th, 2008

Celebrate the Chinese New Year with some good luck knick-knacks.

You don’t want to mess with a fortune cookie, do you? And fortune cookie says, “Paint the House Red (and Gold), Good Luck for 1,000 Generations.” So here are some red (and gold) home accessories—and even a little mascot for good measure—that should keep your place’s feng shui happy.

1. A good luck charm/calendar/cute cat all wrapped into one very discreet accessory for your desk (B1,900, Musume). It brings money, promotions and transports your boss to a permanent state of bliss.

2. Red underwater seaweeds that look like Matisse cutouts keep your fruits from rolling all over the dinner table—and turn them into modern art (B3,500, Alessi).

3. For a Chinese touch of kitsch, drink your Bordeaux in these chiseled red wine glasses with golden fringes (B1,990 each, Creart). Any toast made with such handsome glassware is bound to bring good luck.

4. Red doesn’t have to be excessively ornate. Get minimalist and tidy by locking away your treasures in this red transparent case (B295, Lookers)—just make sure it’s not something you want to keep a secret.

5. Bring your boring couch to life with a couple of blazing red pillows (B795, Shangri-La).

6. It’s cute, it tells time, it’s red (B395, Love Square).

7. A large good luck charm cat and four smaller cats surrounding it make up this superb artifact (B3,900, Neko Chan). Its ancient significance is believed to be as a bringer of luck (right hand up), happiness (white), success (red), safety (black) and health (purple).

8. Drop a little candle in these red and gold glasses and your romantic wishes are sure to come true (B195 each, Petal).
