106/12-13 Lang Suan Rd., 02-254-6463. Open daily 6pm-late.
The buzz: Following the closure of Ad Makers, Quake steps into the live music void on Lang Suan, mirroring the former favorite’s winning formula with live music, a cozy atmosphere and an extensive Thai menu.
The décor: A little confused. Gray walls and a gray floor are certainly not the most exciting color choice and the lighting already looks dated. The large entrance leads into a low-ceilinged downstairs bar area, with a stage at one end and a lot of simple wooden tables and chairs crammed in front of it. At the back is a wall of bottles and a small brick bar to prop yourself up. on. Head up the wide staircase past more bottles, and you reach the more spacious (and quieter) mezzanine with views over the stage, comfier chairs and a pool table.
The music: Featuring the former bands from Ad Makers, music is a big part of the bar’s appeal. Acoustic Soul start the night off with a mix of chilled out reggae and inter hits, before the excellent Big Boy Band take to the stage from 10pm and get the place jumping with their polished renditions of classic, if slightly middle of the road covers. Think Queen, Police and even a spot of Phil Collins.
The crowd: A good mix of expats and Thais. It can be quiet early on, but does fill up once the bands hit the stage.
The price: Wine by the glass B150, cocktails B200, whiskey B200, mixers B50 and beer B130.
Why you’ll come back: For the easy going atmosphere, cheap food and the chance to sing along to your favorite tracks.
