Q&A:Thepsakdi Thongnopkoon
February 6th, 2008
My Girl is the second solo exhibition of Thepsakdi Thongnopkoon (see +art page 28). In this exhibit he chooses to focus on the shape of the Thai female body, stressing the curves, not the details.
What’s your inspiration?
Thai murals, which depict the woman with smooth curves—not with details like muscles or veins. This is the Thai Buddhist style and I really wanted to make that work with female bodies.
What’s your message?
My Girl is about feeling, you can swap the position of each piece and the feeling is going to change. I think all my artworks before this exhibit used to tell a story, but this time, I’m focusing on the body. Culture is like a blanket that steals our life. Likewise, if you cover a woman’s body with a blanket, she disappears. I try to lift the blanket.
Why paint women?
Women are smooth, curvy, symbols of motherhood. Their bodies are much more interesting
than men’s. Netchanok Klinkesorn
