Q&A: Radklao Amaradit

Powerhouse singer Radklao Amaradit joins jazz septet Denny & Friends, led by Dr. Den Euprasert the Dean of Rangsit University’s Conservatory of Music, at the TrueMusic Hua Hin Jazz Festival. See +out of town page 33.

What is it like collaborating with Denny & Friends?

Dr. Den and I have been friends for a long time, so it’s a pleasure to work with him. But I do feel a bit pressured because he is so talented. I’ve got to try my best just to keep up.

But most people would argue that you are a talented singer in your own right.

That’s what they think (sighs). Personally, when I do something, I give it my all in order to deliver a good job. But I feel I have to try even harder to live up to expectations, and that can be stressful. Believe it or not, after all these years, I still get excited every time I have to perform on stage. I might not seem it, but offstage, I’m not that confident.

So are you preparing for the Hua Hin Jazz Festival?

My job depends on my voice, and my voice depends on my health. So, it’s essential to take good care of myself. I need to get enough rest and watch my diet. I don’t drink alcohol, but I still have to be careful with tea/coffee as well as water, which can’t be too hot or too cold. I also have to meet my personal vocal teacher and vocal trainer at least once a week to keep my voice in shape. It might sound demanding, but it has become my routine. You might think I’m crazy, but I can’t afford to get sick. If my voice changes, the audience will know.
You’ve performed with many artists from different genres.

Anyone you still want to work with?

A lot, actually. The more I meet and work with new people, the more I learn from them. It opens my world as an artist, allowing me to explore and embark on new challenges. Plus, It keeps me motivated.

Last words to fans going to the Hua Hin Jazz Festival?

Well they can expect to see me performing songs from my previous albums, but thanks to Denny & Friends they’ll have a new jazz arrangement. Most people go to the festival to see international artists, but I would be grateful if they can lend support to local artists like me.
