Q&A: PREYAWIT NILACHULAKA

Q&A: Preyawit Nilachulaka

Preyawit “Palm” Nilachulaka’s Sideline exhibit at the Teo + Namfah gallery is a series of provocative paintings about the changes to young adults’ lifestyles in modern-day Thai society. The piece pictured here is titled “Sey Cheeze” and features a young woman with four breasts. It is just one in a series addressing the rise of  materialism and superficiality within the younger generation. See +art this page.

Medium and technique used:
Acrylic colors—because they are easy to use, they dry fairly quickly and I feel the tones are more vivid which gives the piece more character. Plus, unlike oil colors, acrylic paints don’t have pungent odors. I need it to be that way because I wouldn’t want strong chemicals to start affecting people in their home!

Inspiration behind the piece:This new generation of women believe that a breast augmentation could potentially help with they way they look and in turn, “increase their market value.” It’s almost become a fashion for young teenagers in Thailand! This piece is a sarcastic retaliation to that. If you want them bigger why not double the quantity at the same time?

Message, meaning or symbolism:The number of young women in the sex industry—mainly school and university students—has increased exponentially. This piece is just a way for me to point out what is going on within society, especially within today’s youth.

How can a viewer approach this piece of work? I guess it depends on each individual. It’s really up to you how you want to view it. Some may look at it and retaliate by labeling me a cynic. Others might view it in a much lighter manner. I came up with this piece to throw out a message. I’m not trying to dictate what people need to do about society today.
