Q&A: Pongpisut Pew-On

Pongpisut “Tangmo” Pew-On, son of legendary footballer Piyaphong, is certainly a chip off the old block. The 22-year-old plays for the Royal Thai Air Force FC, but has also found time to try his hand at acting with the rom-com Hagao. Tangmo plays Norn Boong, a shy guy who has to ask for flirting tips from his tomboy friend.

How did you land the role?

I went to the audition and luckily they offered me the job! I’ve been to many auditions before, but this is the first time that I get a chance to appear on the big screen.

Do you think you are similar to the character you play?

We are similar, yes. I’ve never, ever flirted with a girl. I really don’t know how to flirt! If I ever did manage to have the guts to approach one, I’m not sure what I would actually say!

What was the most difficult part of making Hagao?

I got excited too easily. Acting, like playing football, requires a lot of practice. I had to practice a lot in order to portray the character well. I was lucky that I got to work with experienced actors like Mum Jokmok. He gave me useful acting tips and he made me laugh a lot during the filming.

What’s more difficult: being a football player or an actor?

They are equally difficult. Both jobs require skill, physical strength, practice and patience.

So, do you see yourself as a footballer or an actor?

Actually, I’d like to be both. I am still playing for the Royal Thai Air Force FC, but I am currently injured. So now I’ve got to take a break and maybe I can concentrate on acting for a bit—it’s a lot of fun.
