Q&A: O-Fu-Fu
Q&A: O-Fu-Fu
May 9th, 2008
Ball (not pictured above), Off and Tarn, from the new hip hop crew, O-Fu-Fu, released a debut album titled Crazy on a small label and might have remained below the radar if it wasn’t for their nomination at the Seesan Awards 2008 for Best Hip Hop Album.
BK: O-Fu-Fu, what does it mean?
O-Fu-Fu: It’s from Aof. He had an afro, so we called him “Aof Fu Fu” and then it became the name of our band.
BK: What was the biggest challege you faced while recording your debut album?
O-Fu-Fu: Mostly lack of time. Each of us has a lot of responsibilities; it’s not like when we were kids. We have to study or work and it’s hard to get free time to get together. Tarn ended up dropping out of school because of the album. Now we get little gigs to DJ or MC at events. Our biggest problem is still making time for everything.
BK: What’s your favorite song on the album?
O-Fu-Fu: We would like to recommend “Aok-Kam-Lang” (Exercise). We already have a music video for the song. The story is about inviting a girl to go exercise. It’s a little bit R-rated.
BK: Are you proud of your achievements so far?
O-Fu-Fu: We think we can do better than this. We see all the stuff we could have done better in the album, but now, it’s all going to go in the next album. So, we can’t say we’re satisfied. We can go higher and do it better. Just wait till our next release!
BK: Where can we see you rap?
O-Fu-Fu: We’ll do campus tours in universities and schools in Bangkok. And then, if that works out, we might tour all over the country. For now, we’re here.
BK: Why do you think you were nominated for the Seesan Awards?
O-Fu-Fu: We’re different. We have our own style. The jury must have been bored with all the other guys out there.
BK: Can you make a living as a hip hop artist?
O-Fu-Fu: We’re already earning money from this, but we need a good manager to support us.
BK: Who’s your favorite hip-hop artist?
O-Fu-Fu: Jay-Z, Lil’ Jon and Twista because of their rap styles and the subject matters of their songs.
BK: Do hip-hop enthusiasts always have to be thugged out?
O-Fu-Fu: Just be yourself, that’s the best you can do. People think hip-hop is just fashion. Hip-hop is a culture.
