Q&A: Nasnan Thiapairat

May 30th, 2008

After years of hard luck in singing contests, Nasnan “Ploy” Thiapairat, 20, is finally releasing her debut pop/R&B single “Hak Ther Mod Rak” on mixiclub.com. She tells us about her lifelong love of singing and what it’s like to receive hate mail.

BK: Was becoming a singer always your dream?

Ploy: Yes. My mom said that I loved singing and dancing since I was small. Every morning at school I volunteered to sing the national anthem. I then joined a singing school and entered numerous singing competitions. I usually made it into the fi nal 10 but never actually won.

BK: How did it feel to always get so close but not win?

Ploy: There were times that I wanted to give up, but I always pulled myself together because I knew this was my dream career. I can still remember how during one contest I caught a cold, which made it very difficult for me to sing.

BK: Who are your musical influences?

Ploy: I really admire Mariah Carey. As for Thai singers, I like Maleewan Jamena, Took Wiyada and Panadda Ruengwut.

BK: How did the opportunity to record your first single arise?

Ploy: I was telling my best friend that I wanted to make my own songs and she recommended her brother, Kai Iamworakul, as a possible producer. “Hak Ther Mod Rak” is a ballad with a bit of pop, a bit of R&B and a bit of soul. It should really appeal to female fans.

BK: Why didn’t you sign with a big record label?

Ploy: I think it’s better to go after your dream instead of waiting for it to come to you. Making my own album lets me reflect who I really am.

BK: What is the biggest challenge?

Ploy: Everything! I didn’t expect things to be this complicated.

BK: What was it like having Pitch Witwisit in your music video?

Ploy: He was very nice, but I got a lot of hate mail from his groupies! In a way it was quite funny. At least it meant people were watching my music video!

BK: What was your reaction when you first saw the video?

Ploy: I changed the channel! It felt so strange seeing myself on TV, I am still not used to it.

BK: Do you have any other passions besides music?

Ploy: If I have any free time, I like to play with my rabbit and read the news online. I love cooking, too. You must try my pasta. It’s yummy.
