Q&A: Moko Yokoichi

Q&A: Moko Yokoichi

Thais might be mad on Korea, but that doesn’t mean teenagers don’t keep a close eye on Japanese fashion through magazines like Cawaii! There they’ll spot Moko Yokoichi, a half Japanese 16-year-old high schooler, who recently landed a modeling contract after making it to the final round of a Cawaii! contest.

BK: How did you first get into the world of modeling?
Moko Yokoichi: I went for the Cawaii Girls Contest 2008 and managed to get through to the final round. After that, I signed an agreement to work with the fashion magazine.

BK: What first inspired you to be a model?
MY: I’m the kind of person who likes having their picture taken and I love to take on a challenge. I had previously tried out for some commercials and competed in beauty contests and it eventually led to magazine modeling.

BK: What are the good and bad points of the job?
MY: There are lots of advantages and I’ve learned a lot of new things from being a model. It allows me to explore new places and discover the hippest shops so I am always up to date on the latest trends. On the downside it does mean I get to eat a lot less junk food than before!

BK: What do you have to do to keep yourself in good shape?
MY: I have to maintain a healthy diet and take good care of myself. I also need to take care of my skin, drink a lot of water, and exercise at least two or three times a week to keep my body physically fit. Also, being a happy person definitely helps a lot.

BK: Is it really that difficult being a model?
MY: Sometimes there’s a lot of pressure because of the limited time available. I have to pose like a professional even though I’m only just starting out. Every time I do a job I am gaining valuable experience and guidance.

BK: Is it difficult juggling your work and your studies?
MY: No, because I am quite good at managing my time. When I get a call about work from Cawaii!, I can plan in advance, and take upcoming work home with me so that I don’t have to catch up on my studies.

BK: What do you want to be in the future?
MY: With my love of fashion, beauty, drama, and singing, I would love to do something in the entertainment business. If not I would like to become a fashion designer. I am already trying out some sketches of my own designs.
