Q&A: KAI KINGSLEY III

Q&A: Kai Kingsley III

March 25th, 2008

Born in March, Kai Kingsley III, from the US, showcases his bright and colorful “human paintings.”

What’s the highlight of the exhibition?

My “flower ladies,” which are a large part of the show: a series of colorful, monolithic paintings with human-like figures that have flower headdresses.

Tell us about the mediums you used in this exhibition.

I work on either handmade paper or canvas because they are completely different from each other. The look, texture, quality, application of paint and finally framing are factors In deciding what to paint on. There will be paintings on both handmade paper, which I make, and canvases that are custom made for me here in Bangkok. I’m happy to say I have experimented with many surfaces, even wood, but eventually I found what worked best for me.

If you had to paint Bangkok, how would you represent it?

I have painted Bangkok. What I came up with was canvases that were vibrant and abstract showing a busy ancient slash modern city of tall buildings reflected in water. Cityscapes are fun to create. Perhaps, it will be a theme of a future show.

What inspires you?

Although I enjoy Thailand’s islands and beaches, they cannot excite the imagination like a busy city can. Drifting on the river toward Chinatown, past ancient temples and huge, modern structures and bridges brings on many ideas. Or something as simple as taking a ride on the sky train can be enough inspiration for a new painting.
